March 28, 2016 - SSH – Laurel Highlands Earns Pulmonary Center of Excellence Designation from Parent Company

Select Specialty Hospital (SSH) – Laurel Highlands, a long-term acute care (LTAC) hospital, recently received the Pulmonary Center of Excellence (PCOE) designation from their parent company, Select Medical. This award is exclusive to facilities in the Select Medical family of hospitals.

“Here at Select, we feel a very real responsibility to provide the best possible care for our patients,” said Dr. Samuel Hammerman, MD, MMM, CPE, FCCP, Chief Medical Officer for Select Medical. “We already maintain very high standards for ourselves, often well above national benchmarks. However, this designation means a hospital has met even more rigorous protocols to take it to the next level of care.”

The designation certifies that a hospital provides the absolute very latest protocols and best practices in the nation for mechanical ventilation and care. Beginning in 2015, many within Select Medical’s network of 112 specialty sites began the rigorous process of applying for this designation.

“Our goal is simple – maximize a patient’s level of function while decreasing or eliminating the need for mechanical ventilation,” said Gloria Skinner, MSN, RN, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer for Select Medical. “Our hospitals already do this well, but the new designation means a hospital has gone above and beyond to truly maximize the highest discharge-to-home rate possible. This should return even more patients to a high-quality, productive life.”

Hospitals that demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of ventilator weaning and patient mobility, along with establish medication protocols and effective strategies for minimizing ventilator associated pneumonia receive the PCOE designation. SSH-Laurel Highlands’ pulmonary team is comprised of pulmonologists, respiratory therapists, nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists, dieticians and other specialists, all trained in caring for the acute pulmonary patient.

SSH – Laurel Highlands is a 39-bed hospital serving Northern and North Central West Virginia, Western Maryland and Westmoreland, Indiana, and Fayette counties in Pennsylvania. “I am very proud of our hospital,” said Laurie Kozorosky, CEO for SSH – Laurel Highlands. “This team stops at nothing to do what is best for our patients.”
